Counseling Services

The ICS MS School Counseling department is committed to providing services to ensure student growth in three domains: academic, career, and social/emotional. We employ a proactive counseling curriculum targeted to the school and offer need-based individual/group counseling services done with confidentiality. Our Student Support Department (SSD) meets weekly to address student concerns. It is our hope that not only students, but staff and parents receive helpful counsel from the School Counseling Department. Counselors reach out to students based on self-referrals or referrals from parents and teachers. Group sessions include grade-level meetings with students, while parents and staff also benefit through avenues such as Coffee with Counselors, parent meetings, and staff presentations.

Our school counselors want to communicate pertinent information to students, parents, and staff. A variety of resources are available on our counseling resources website, Coffee with Counselor talks, counseling department newsletter, and through the counseling curriculum.

Social/Emotional Development

One of our goals is to help students better develop socially and emotionally, whether it be with new student transitions, coping with stress, or dealing with friendship issues. Being in middle school comes with its own set of developmental challenges, but we aim to help our middle schools learn to self-advocate and actively problem-solve. We strive to make sure our new students feel like they are a part of our MS family. The school counselors take part in welcoming new students, explaining and creating their schedules, and orienting them to ICS.

Academic Progress

We follow the academic progress of our students to ensure that MS course requirements are met. In order to better accommodate the various needs of our students, we review student progress regularly throughout the year to better support students. From students who are struggling academically to those wishing to have the most academically challenging program possible, we have you covered. In addition, school counselors help all students determine their course schedules. Initially, students are given the opportunity to preregister for (next year) courses via Renweb in the early spring of the year. Once counselors generate student schedules, they are distributed to students so they can review and meet with their school counselor if changes are needed.

Career Talks

No one would argue that decisions regarding future college and career are important. Each year, there is a career exploration unit to help MS students learn about diverse career fields. In addition, 8th graders have individual 4-year course planning meetings in preparation for high school pre-registration.
