Guidance Overview

Grades Pre-K through Five
Elementary takes a holistic approach to guiding students to develop life skills and exemplary behavior. The homeroom teacher is with one class of students for the majority of the school day. He or she gets to know each child quite well and will give immediate direction or correction to the student as needed. Each homeroom teacher prepares a class behavior plan that is approved by the elementary principal. When a student needs additional encouragement to make wise choices, the teacher refers the child to the elementary principal for counsel and follow-through. An educational resource teacher provides testing and assistance to students who need additional help to succeed academically.

Grades Six through Twelve
The middle school and high school guidance department is available to serve students and parents of students from grades six through twelve. Some of the unique services that we have to offer you are: the college information center, free tutoring/matching with peers, group and individual counseling, grading and transcript requests, our new online database with test prep, college search, scholarship search, and much more.  The college information center provides up-to-date hard copies of applications and promotional materials from colleges and universities. The files are located outside the guidance offices, and tables and chairs are provided for parents and students to relax and read about schools from specific countries or states. Last year marked the start of a free tutoring referral program with the guidance department.  Students who need extra help in a specific subject are matched with students who show strengths in that subject area. A tutoring station has been set up outside the guidance offices providing space and supervision of the tutoring services. Appointments and drop-ins are welcomed in the counseling office for academic, career, college, and personal counseling (appointments preferred to ensure availability). Academic group counseling is offered three times per year to assist students on academic probation, at risk for loss of credit, or just needing an extra helping hand. All grading and transcript issues are handled through our registrar’s office. If you have questions concerning report cards or academic transcripts contact Mrs. Somporn or Mrs. Kath. Lastly, our new online database through Cengage learning provides up to date test preparation materials as well as practice tests – free for all ICS students. If you have career planning needs, college scholarship questions, or anything related to college and careers, the answers are online. Be sure to check the guidance calendar for important “assignments” from the counseling office to assist students with their college and career planning.
